What Are Facial Veins?

Facial veins can appear as thread-like red, blue, or purple veins easily visible on the skin surface. They are commonly present on the sides of the nostrils. Also, small vascular tumors in the skin called hemangiomas can be present on the face and other parts of the body.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, spider veins appear most often in fair-skinned women. These vessels lie close to the surface of the skin and can look like a string of red or blue unconnected lines, or may appear in a pattern called a sunburst around the nose and cheeks. Because of their location, removing facial spider veins needs more targeted treatments than most topical and oral medications, or supplements can provide.

Laser treatment is commonly used to improve the cosmetic appearance of these unsightly vessels. At Santa Fe Vein & Med Spa, we use a vascular laser to reduce the appearance of facial veins and hemangiomas dramatically.

What Causes Facial Veins?

Facial veins are usually caused by the natural aging process of the skin, as well as a genetic predisposition, sun damage, trauma to the site, acne, or specific skin disorders such as rosacea. Post-menopausal women often experience thinning of the skin, which can reveal the appearance of blood vessels. The veins can be as thin as the diameter of a hair shaft, or more prominent and blue, like a piece of thread.

Any activities causing undue stress to the face, such as sneezing from allergies, repeated vomiting, and physical injuries resulting in bruises, may cause facial veins. Hormones, pregnancy, and birth control pills can also cause facial veins to appear. Since the body produces elevated amounts of estrogen during pregnancy, women may suffer from vein weakness. Since the blood flow also increases, facial veins may become enlarged, causing blood to obstruct the vessels. Birth control pills mimic pregnancy, and may similarly result in the development of spider veins.

What Does a Vascular Laser Do?

“LASER” is the acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser is a unique light emitting device which gives off a single, precise wavelength of targeted light, designed to eliminate an issue or problem.

Facial veins are most effectively treated using vascular lasers. Vascular lasers work by selectively targeting unwanted or abnormal blood vessels, or spider veins on your face while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy skin tissue. The laser beam targets the blood vessels to seal them up, causing them to fade away over a few weeks.

At Santa Fe Vein & Med Spa, we use the Dornier Vascular Laser for best results. With a 940 nm wavelength, the laser looks for blood molecules as its endpoint. It fires with pin-point precision to essentially cauterize and shut down the unwanted blood vessels.

What Should You Expect?

The procedure will begin with a consultation to discuss the treatment. Before starting the session, a topical anesthetic can be applied to minimize patient discomfort.

Facial vein removal using a vascular laser is a relatively quick and minimally invasive procedure. After the treatment, the skin may be mildly red and swollen and may require some icing to reduce the local inflammation. Makeup can easily mask any redness. Some treated vessels may look darker for a few days; then they begin to fade and disappear gradually. Most patients can immediately resume normal activities with no restrictions. For best results, make sure to use skin protective cream and sunblock.

Individual Timeframes and Results May Vary.

The results of the vascular laser treatment are quite impressive and carry a low risk of complications. The procedure may cause a little discomfort but is quite tolerable. Noticeable results can be seen after one treatment, and the facial veins usually resolve gradually over four weeks. Optimal results may require from one to three treatments to achieve.

Individual Timeframes and Results May Vary.

Every patient has unique needs, so you will be advised on the number of follow up sessions needed for best results.

Over time, facial veins treated by a vascular laser may regrow gradually. Using high-quality skin care products, sunscreen, and controlling any underlying rosacea tendencies can minimize regrowth.
