SPIDER VEINS IN SANTA FE, NM

Spider veins are thread-like red, blue, or purple veins visible on the skin surface.

Sometimes they resemble a spider web or tree branches. They may occur alone, or in combination with varicose veins and other signs of vein disease. Treatment is usually sought to improve the cosmetic appearance of these vessels. At Santa Fe Vein & Med Spa, we can use either a vascular laser or injection of a sclerosant solution to improve the appearance of spider veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure for treating spider veins as well as small varicose veins. During the procedure, a medication called sodium tetradecyl sulfate is placed into the veins through a needle. The medication can be injected as a liquid or as a foam, which causes intentional chemical irritation of the vessels, lending to closure of the veins.

After sclerotherapy, we ask our patients to wear compression stockings for up to two weeks after the procedure. We believe that the combination of the medicine and the compression therapy is more likely to successfully close the veins. Strenuous activity should be avoided shortly after the treatment, as this can interfere with the closure process. Patients may, however, walk and resume most normal activities. Timeframes and results may vary from patient to patient.

The treated veins are expected to fade within the following weeks or months. Depending on the number and severity of spider veins present, several sessions may be necessary for the patient's desired results. Timeframes and results may vary from patient to patient.

Laser Treatment

A vascular laser can be used to treat very small spider veins using laser light through intact skin. During the treatment, the vascular laser causes controlled heat damage to the walls of the spider veins. As the veins collapse, oftentimes they become less noticeable over a period of several weeks. Depending on the number of spider veins present, more than one session may be necessary for the patient's desired results. Larger spider veins would likely benefit from treatment of sclerotherapy before considering laser treatment. Laser treatment can be an effective method in dealing with spider veins, however, all candidates are carefully evaluated prior to the treatment to make sure that this procedure is suitable for them. Our team at Santa Fe Vein & Med Spa is dedicated to treating spider veins and other vein issues you may have.
